The
Lakota (Sioux) radio station KILI (which means "super" in
Lakota) near Wounded Knee on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation is an
Indian non- profit organization. It covers an area of approx. 80.000
km2 including all Lakota Reservations in South Dakota. A radio station
fits very well into the oral Lakota tradition. KILI is also a communication
center, especially in cases of emergencies. Many Lakota households are
too poor to afford a phone, but most of them do have a radio. |
||
| Most DJs and speakers of KILI are bilingual (Lakota and English). One of the explicit goals of KILI is to keep the Lakota language alive. Young Lakota consider it prestigious to work at KILI and therefore are interested in the language. Therefore the BIG CITY INDIANS have set themselves a target - one EU to radio KILI for each "Uncle Peyote" CD sold, so that a nation can keep their voice! | ||
